The Spreyton Cider Story – Over a Century of Tasmanian Apple Craft
For Immediate Release – 20 August 2025
Tasmanian Cider with Orchard Roots Since 1908
Spreyton Cider is one of Tasmania’s leading craft cider producers, continuing a family tradition that began in 1908 in the Mersey Valley. The business has grown into a nationally recognised brand while staying true to its orchard heritage and the clean growing conditions of North-West Tasmania.
A Legacy Born in the Apple Isle
The families behind Spreyton Cider have lived and worked in the Mersey Valley since the mid-1800s, cultivating orchards in fertile basalt soils. Today, the fifth generation carries the tradition forward, producing award-winning Tasmanian cider that reflects both heritage and place.
Tasmania’s Ideal Cider Region
North-West Tasmania is regarded as one of Australia’s premier apple growing areas. A cool maritime climate and rich soils create ideal conditions for cider apples with balanced acidity, natural aromatics, and fine sweetness. Spreyton Cider captures this unique Tasmanian terroir in every bottle for an authentic taste experience.
Tree-to-Bottle Authenticity
Spreyton Cider controls the process from tree to bottle. Most fruit is grown in the family’s own orchards, supported by select Tasmanian growers for seasonal and specialty releases. Apples are harvested at peak ripeness, pressed on site, and fermented using a blend of traditional methods and modern craft.
Apples that Define Flavour
Spreyton Cider’s distinct character comes from a balance of modern and heritage apple varieties. Pink Lady and Royal Gala deliver freshness and gentle sweetness, while Sturmer Pippin adds structure. Heritage fruit such as Gravenstein, Cox’s Orange Pippin, and Kingston Black brings depth, tannin, and layered complexity for a cider that is unmistakably Tasmanian.
A Range that Reflects Heritage and Innovation
The portfolio spans crisp dry apple ciders, single-varietal releases, and limited-edition blends that showcase each harvest. Standout releases, including Kingston Black, highlight the cidery’s dedication to both tradition and innovation.
Looking Ahead
Spreyton Cider continues to expand heritage plantings while exploring new flavour styles that meet modern tastes. The guiding philosophy remains clear: respect the fruit, respect the land, and honour over 100 years of Tasmanian apple-growing history.
From the Managing Director
“Every glass of Spreyton Cider tells the story of orchards, family, and Tasmania. We are proud to continue a tradition that started in 1908 and to share an authentic Tasmanian product with cider lovers across Australia,” said Grant Langworthy, Spreyton Cider Managing Director.
